Sex in a Microwave Society
November 1, 2007
What is a micro-wave society? A lot of us have heard our society described this way, but what does it really mean?
Let’s look at the small appliance we are being compared to: a quick and easy appliance that depreciates the nutrition value in our food. A micro-wave is kind of a counterfeit for the real thing. It may seem easier, but in the long run it takes its toll. With a micro-wave one doesn’t need patience… it’s interesting that our patience is tried when we simply use an oven that takes about a half hour as apposed to 5 minutes – depending on the grub behind the glass door. Those who have been raised in a microwave society have reflected its influence through their spoiled and impatient behavior. If we were to study a snapshot of the past, we would see our ancestors de-feathering the chicken they would later have to skin, season and then cook. If we were to go back to a time before the invention of the refrigerator, we would observe that even the preparation for a meal was an investment of time. Some of us are unwilling to sacrifice instant gratification to use a simple oven, and we don’t even have to fetch the sticks!
So how does this relate to the sex lives in our micro-wave society? A micro-wave is used when someone settles for convenience, instead of oven-baked quality. Society is settling for what’s quick and easy now but doesn’t taste nearly as good as if they had waited. Anyone that has been easily swayed or pressured to have sex before they are ready, or in a way they had not planned, is faced with the overwhelming sacrifice of quality over convenience. Someone who has been challenged by the pressures of society, and maintains a standard has raised the bar that the world has set. Call it a challenge, call it mysterious; or call it the oven mentality.
In the past anyone who wasn’t married was considered a virgin. In today’s microwave society the definition of a virgin has remained the same, but the reality of it has changed. Society thinks that oral sex is a safe practice that allows all of the sensuality with none of the risks, but in reality STI’s (Sexually Transmitted Infections) have never been as prevalent. Despite years of sexual education, people think that they are risk-free, when in reality they are not. By participating in oral-sex you face the threat of contracting Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, or Herpes on your mouth. This demonstrates that any sexual activity is a gamble. Which would you prefer, an STI or a pregnancy?
By having any kind of sex, you put yourself at risk. Don’t let our microwave society convince you to settle for the counterfeit; instead, adopt the oven-baked mentality and partake in the rewards of quality over convenience. It takes time and patience but protecting yourself is a standard to live by. Is it worth it? You decide.
