On behalf of our President and Board of Directors we would like to communicate a few situations that are facing our nation right now and possibilities for action in speaking to them.

We have many opportunities in the next few weeks to champion life in Canada.

C-510

MP Rod Bruinooge tabled Bill C-510 also known as Roxanne’s Law. In the press release for the Bill, Mr. Bruinooge stated:

“This bill would help protect a pregnant woman who does not want to terminate her pregnancy,” said Bruinooge. “No woman should ever feel intimidated to have an unwanted abortion. Anyone who attempts to force a woman to abort her wanted fetus should face consequences.”

C-384

This Bill, put forward by Bloc MP Francine Lalonde, deals with the legalization of euthanasia in Canada and specifically with a persons ‘right’ to die with dignity. There are no limits on this bill and if it becomes law, assisted suicide would be legal in almost any situation. It was scheduled for debate on April 20 th and is set to be voted on- April 21 st. The communication on this Bill has been consistant and we would love to see it voted against so that it doesn’t go to the committee stage Please take the time to contact your MP and let him/her know how you feel about euthanasia and end of life care in Canada. M-386

This motion, presented by Conservative MP Jeff Watson recommends that the Government examine current federal support measures available for adoptive parents. This is an amazing opportunity to see the profile of adoption raised in Canada.

On April 19 th, MP Jeff Watson appeared before the HUMA committee and asked them to study adoption in Canada with the intent of “ ensuring that the federal government is providing full support to all Canadian families, while “recognizing and respecting provincial and territorial jurisdictions.” Mr. Watson has asked that the Committee make this a “landmark” study, bringing awareness to the issues surrounding adoption and the need for more support in transition once an adoption has taken place.

Please get in touch with the members of the HUMA Committee and thank them for taking the issue of adoption seriously and for studying ways that can make it easier for Canadians to add to their family through adoption. In the words of the Adoption Council of Canada: there are no unwanted children, only unfound parents.
