Contact the Governor General’s office, your Member of Parliament, people on the committee–to politely and continually express your concern over the Order of Canada’s protocol being broken in order to see Morgentaler receive this appointment. The Order of Canada is all about celebrating our identity as a Nation, please communicate that you do not believe abortion is something to be celebrated.
Here are some talking points about the history of the Order and the protocol that they have always followed in making appointments.
Order of Canada History:
- Intended for 2 purposes:
- To recognize outstanding lifetime achievement-local, national and international levels.
- To foster a sense of national unity/serve as a symbol of unity.
- Morgentalers appointment chips away at this unity
- The committee had to take a vote on this appointment, 2 members did not support it, the first time this has ever happened.
- Since 1967-all appointments have been by consensus/unanimity, this has been true for 41 years and 5,400 appointments.
- Why were the rules changed? Because the Advisory Council makes its own rules-it is usually decided by the Chair (Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin)
- The Advisory Council and Order of Canada are set up to be protected from political interference.
- The Governor General has never taken anyone off of the appointments list, neither has the PM.
- Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau was the only PM to interfere-he delayed the appointment of Paul Desmerais Sr for 6 mths. The appointment came at the end of a bitter strike at 2 of the newspapers Desmerais owned-both the PM and the committee in 1978 felt that the timing would reflect poorly on the Order and the government of the day. We know that the Order does reflect on the government.
- Was never intended as a popularity contest, leaving the idea of consensus and moving toward voting flies against the success of the last 41 years!
