URGENT REQUEST
Abortion Statistics:
July 6, 2008

Stats Canada:
Induced Abortions in Canada in hospitals and clinics
1970: 11, 200
2005: 97, 254 (last year of available stats)
These statistics are conservative because not all hospitals and clinics are required to report abortion numbers.

Abortion/Morgentaler Timeline:

1967-Morgentaler presents a brief to the House of Commons asking that Canada’s abortion law be changed.
1970-Morgentaler imprisoned in Montreal for 10 months for performing illegal abortions.
1973-Morgentaler stated publicly that he had performed 5, 000 abortions without the permission of the 3 Dr. committees that were required by law, Morgentaler videotaped himself performing procedures
1983-Morgentaler charged again in Ontario-acquittal by the Supreme Court of Canada.
1988-Supreme Court of Canada struck down Canada’s abortion law as unconstitutional.
1989-Supreme Court ruled that a Father had no right to veto a woman’s abortion decision.
1995-Provincial and Federal rulings force Nova Scotia and New Brunswick to allow private abortion clinics.  Access to abortions not consistent across Canada-some provinces and territories decide to cover cost of abortions outside of hospitals, others didn’t and women had to pay for clinical abortions out of their own pocket.

2006-Bloc and NDP are strong pro-choice parties-Liberal and Conservative Parties have members that are pro-choice and members that are pro-life-neither party has an official stand on abortion.
2006-Liberal MP Paul Steckle introduced a bill that would make abortion illegal after 20 weeks gestation, that bill did not pass.
2007-abortion considered a low priority for most Canadians
2008-Morgentaler appointed to the Order of Canada-abortion considered a higher priority.

Canada Snapshot-Today:

*In 1988, 16% of pregnancies in Quebec ended in abortion, today, 30% do.  Women are using abortion, tax funded and easily available as an alternative form of birth control.
*Abortion is being used as a means of gender selection and cultural groups that favour male children are choosing to abort their daughters. The argument for women’s rights in this case just doesn’t fit.
