Bill C-484: Unborn Victims of Crime Act
January 29, 2008
Description
This bill, which was introduced by MP Ken Epp, is about protecting the choice of a woman to give birth to her child. It sets out to recognize unborn children as crime victims when they are injured or killed during the commission of an offence against their mothers.
The Details
If passed, the revisions to the Criminal Code would state that at any stage of development, if an unborn child is directly or indirectly injured or murdered, the person responsible will be held accountable for a serious offence. He or she would receive a minimum sentence of ten years, up to life imprisonment. If the offence was of reckless nature and no intent was present, the person causing harm would still be accountable for a serious offence. He or she would then receive a maximum sentence of ten years for conviction of a less serious nature, with a maximum sentence of eighteen months.
Other Information
- Alexa McDonough of the NDP states that not a single woman or organization has approached her asking her to support this bill. She stands firm against this bill and states that: “laws shouldn’t be based on revenge.”
- In British Columbia, December 2007, two men were charged with four counts against the Wildlife Act; two for killing two adult female deer and two for their unborn fawns. These charges have put the welfare of wildlife above all humans.
The Facts
We need to act now. Members of Parliament will be sitting again on Monday, January 28, and they need to hear about your support of this bill. MP Ken Epp has gone to great lengths to ensure that this bill clearly stays away from the abortion issue and we need to make sure that our communication follows his lead.
Please take a few minutes and call, write or email your MP. Let him or her know that bill C-484 makes sense and that a person causing harm to an unborn/wanted fetus should be held accountable.
Conclusion
The second reading of Bill C-484 is anticipated to take place on Friday, February 29, 2008. Voting will take place on Wednesday, March 5, 2008. This vote will determine whether the bill will move forward to the Justice Committee stage or cease to exist.
Standing together – our voice will be heard.
