Responsibility or Revenue?
February 18, 2007
Telus, Canada’s second largest phone company has made a decision to provide pornographic videos, strip teases, and photos to its customers. This move makes them the first wireless provider in our country to offer pornography fro $3-4 per video or image.
Despite receiving some complaints-135, as of February 9- Telus spokesman Jim Johannsson has assured subscribers that “the company is not breaking the law nor is it providing something that has not been available on cellphones for some time.” Johannsson went on to say “we feel that the responsible thing to do is put in place age verification controls and to ensure that the content complies with all provincial standards and regulations and is legal for download in Canada.”
The idea that their decision as a company was based on social responsibility seems far fetched and Canoe news reported on February 10 that “British based Juniper research estimates revenues of 14.5 billion US could be generated by the adult mobile content sector over the next 5 years.” The same research group estimates that video based services will account for over 70 percent of revenue in the mobile adult content market by 2011.
So, we ask a question: socially responsible or huge cash grab?
