Charismatic leader Jack Layton has lost his battle with Cancer.

Layton stepped down as federal NDP leader after being diagnosed with
an aggressive secondary cancer. He had hoped to resume his duties in parliament this fall.

“We deeply regret to inform you that the Honourable Jack Layton, leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada, passed away at 4:45 a.m. today,” his family said in a statement. “He passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family and loved ones.”

It is a tragic loss to the Canadian political landscape. Our condolences and prayers are with his family and friends.

Layton was 61.
